Veterinary Externship Program

Anti-Cruelty (AC) and the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine are expanding our partnership to enhance the Externship Program.

Undergraduate students participating in shelter medicine or surgical externships will receive first-hand experience in patient care, and:

  • Two weeks of instruction at Anti-Cruelty, in a fast-paced, 
    multi-faceted environment, preparing them for shelter and 
    private medicine 
  • Shelter operations, understanding how all departments play 
    an essential role from admissions to marketing 
  • Community outreach, providing care within and outside of 
    the shelter for pets of people lacking access to veterinary care 
  • Behavior in the shelter setting


    How You Can Support: Sponsor an Extern

A gift of $2,820 will sponsor an extern and provide the following: 

  • 13-night stay at Best Western, within walking distance from Anti-Cruelty (significantly reduced rate) 
  • Parking for 14 days
  • Mileage reimbursement for traveling between College of Veterinary Medicine in Urbana-Champaign and Anti-Cruelty in Chicago
  • Food stipend
  • Uniform

 

To provide the best educational experience, additional equipment and supplies: 

  • Books, four Shelter Medicine books essential to daily practice 
  • Stethoscopes, adult and pediatric 
  • Anti-Cruelty resource binder, containing protocols and other resources all externs will need to gain the most of their experience 
  • Office supplies so every student can keep notes 


Capacity for the program is 40 externs each year, with estimated 
total costs of $113,400.
Fundraising Goal: $125,000 annually
Impact: Boost shelter awareness and increase shelter veterinarian talent
