Become a Volunteer
Thank you for your interest in volunteering on-site at The Anti-Cruelty Society!
We recognize the valuable roles that volunteers play and are committed to providing thorough, hands-on training, as well as ongoing support to every volunteer. For this reason, anyone looking to help at our main location or at the satellite adoption center must complete the training curriculum below before they can begin their volunteer work.
The first step toward joining our team is completing our web-based volunteer application. This interactive tool has been designed to collect basic information about your skills, interests, and experience to help us make the best possible program match for you. It also highlights some of our most important philosophies and position statements.
Before starting the application, you will want to ensure that you meet our basic volunteer requirements. Within the application you will be asked to designate the volunteer program for which you would like to receive initial training. Click here to view a full list of available programs. Once trained you will have the opportunity to cross-train into different areas.
Please allot 15-20 minutes of your time to complete the form. Once submitted your app will enter our processing queue for review.
Volunteer Training Curriculum
Volunteer applicants who have been successfully matched with their chosen program will be sent an invitation to complete our virtual volunteer orientation. Volunteer candidates are offered training dates based on current needs within the organization. For this reason note that it may take between 2-4 weeks for approved applicants to begin training.
Step 1: Virtual Volunteer Orientation
This important informational video provides volunteers with a general overview of The Anti-Cruelty Society, the services we offer the community, and our various departments. Once your volunteer application has been screened and approved you will receive a link to the Virtual Volunteer Orientation. Following the completion of the orientation you will need to complete the corresponding quiz before receiving an invitation for the second step of training.
Step 2: Animal Handling Training
Our Animal Handling Training is an in-person lecture-based training designed to provide volunteers with an in-depth overview of our training approach, handling goals, philosophies and more. This training equips new animal handlers with the knowledge they need to attend step 3 of volunteer training. Note that when signing up for this step in training you will be asked to pay a $25 fee which will cover the cost of your Volunteer Welcome Kit which is distributed after you’ve completed all four steps of training.
Step 3: Program Training
In these in-depth, hands-on training sessions, experienced volunteers guide trainees through the ins and outs of their chosen volunteer program. Prior to attending program training, volunteers are sent their program’s manual to review, as well as a series of videos to watch to help prepare them for the session.
Step 4: Solo Session
This final step in the training process allows new volunteers an opportunity to test drive the skills they’ve acquired through their training. Volunteer trainees are granted their official volunteer status following the successful completion of a Solo Session.
