The Anti-Cruelty Society Receives More Than $27,000 Grant from PetSmart Charities®
The Anti-Cruelty Society will spay and neuter a minimum of 500 feral and free-roaming community cats over the next year

CHICAGO—The Anti-Cruelty Society is pleased to announce that we received a grant of $27,700 from PetSmart Charities, the leading funder of animal welfare in North America, to provide the Chicago community’s feral and free-roaming cats with spay and neuter surgeries. Sterilizing feral and free-roaming cats is the number one way to prevent unwanted litters and help decrease the number of homeless pets in the area.

Over the next 12 months, the Society will perform at least 500 spay and neuter surgeries on these cats in Cook, Kendall, and Iroquois counties in Illinois. The grant will cover the expenses of the procedure, including the necessary surgery medication, medical complications, rabies vaccination, and ear tip. The grant will also provide funding for the necessary trapping supplies, equipment and transportation to support colony reduction for the identified community of cats.

The Anti-Cruelty Society encourages and supports actions to minimize the problem of free-roaming abandoned and feral cats. We have been providing traps to facilitate feral cat colony management and providing free sterilizations for feral cats for more than 10 years. This grant will not only help support our current efforts, but will help the Society make a greater impact to reduce Chicago’s homeless cat population.

PetSmart Charities aims to proactively prevent pet homelessness through increased spay and neuter efforts.  With the help of animal welfare partners, such as The Anti-Cruelty Society, PetSmart Charities has funded over 1.4 million spay and neuter surgeries in the U.S. since 2009.
